What is this European Innovation Project all about?

LeanShips is a Horizon 2020 European Innovation project that aims to demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of energy saving and emission reduction technologies at full scale. The project supports developments that make new and existing vessels more efficient and less polluting.

Target markets ...
... are the small to midsized ships for intra-European waterborne transport, vessels for offshore operations and the leisure and cruise market.

Seven demonstrators will be carried out …
… combining technologies for improved efficiency and pollution reduction, in line with end-users’ needs and requirements.

Main objectives …
CO2 reduction of at least 25%, estimated fuel saving of up to 25%, expected decrease of SOx/NOx/PM air pollutants by up to 100%

LeanShips Project Pyramid - Project descriptionLeanShips Project Pyramid - Demo Cases

The Basis Layer contains the seven demonstrators (Work Packages 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) for the technical work to be carried out by dedicated consortia of stakeholders which are sharing common interests on technology and market. The basis layer provides input on experiences from the demonstrators, the so-called “Lessons Learned”, to the Integration Layer and reports on progress and the use of resources to the Management Layer.

The Integration Layer consists of two functions, the Quality Assurance and Integration Platform (Work Package 02) and Dissemination and Market Uptake (Work Package 03). This layer also contains the Guide to Innovation, a common web-based platform which integrates LeanShips “Lessons Learned” and additional external information. The Guide will yield added value beyond the collective results of the demonstrators and will also provide internal and external dissemination material.

The Management Layer contains the Financial and Administrative functions for managing the project and communicating with the European Commission (Work Package 01).
